I worked on Congstar as head of 3D and animation director for Parasol Island who got the job assignment from DDB Berlin. DDB wanted to have an eye popping spot that would stand apart and would draw attention to the newly created discount brand of Telekom.
For the establishing spot Steve Scott, a fantastic Australian animator and director, was hired to create the psychedelic visuals and direct it. Steve has a very traditional background, was an animator for Disney and was our first choice for the job as his style ( a bit like Fischinger`s Yellow Submarine) was perfect for this project.
This Spot was a mixture of 2D animation and 3D. As Steve is a 2D guy, I took the art he created and translated most of it into 3D and led the team at Parasol. In addition I created several of the shots like the volcano part , the selection of the elements and the end with the paper bag.
On the second spot I worked as animation director. Where the first spot just had to draw attention, the second one had
to communicate the message, that you would really be free if you would change to Congstar. We had to use as much elements from the first spot as we could because we had less time and budget on the second one.
The spots got attention and were quite popular in the focused group of customers. Nevertheless DDB later changed the style and introduced real actors to promote the brand. Maybe these two spots were a bit too progressive and still a bit ahead of time. I am sure this will change more and more in the future as animation and motion graphics become more and more part of our life. [created by Tim Weimann]
