Shell was a job which was done by Kingz Entertainment in Cologne. They hired me to develop the water colour look and work on several of the shots which are shown in the spot.
First I created a compositing network that would change real footage that was shot before greenscreen into a moving water colour image. Attached you can find an example sequence which shows this stage of work (sequence A). In the end this process was not used to this extent as the client wanted to see the actors not too much changed by that water color look. Nevertheless we worked with it on stuff like the garage and the shell logo.
Later we combined the footage with water colour blotches I made on paper and liquid water colour sequences Kingz recorded.
I also developed a tool to deform image sequences as if a water drop would liquefy it (sequence B). It is based on Maya particles. Each particle depicts its movement as a vector by a colour code which is then used in compositing to deform a 2D image sequence.
For the establishing shot I used imaged-based modeling to create the garage (sequence C) and later gave it a water colour look by using the compositing workflow I had developed. I was also responsible for the claim and logo shot in the end. [created by Tim Weimann]
