I worked on this spot as animation director at Parasol Island. Münchner Merkur is a local newspaper in Munich which is often perceived as a conservative paper and indeed it is read by a lot of people who like to vote for conservative parties. Münchener Merkur wanted to have a spot to show that their journalistic approach was much more diverse and that there were more and more socialist voters who liked to read their paper as well.
As the conservative main color is black and the socialist main color is red, Münchner Merkur came up with the idea to depict theses two parties as native Africans and American Indians who both equally like to read their paper.
This was a difficult concept as it can easily come across as a racist remark.
To avoid this problem I designed a very colorful, cartoony world and tried to bring in as much Bavarian and Munich
elements as I could. I wanted to underline that this spot is about German political parties and not really about aboriginal people. We wanted to make a funny clip about the first group, not the second.
Though you can still debate about the original idea for this spot, I like the playful mood of it and the funny little ideas we could include.
Our great team at that time included Michael Sormann, Waldemar Fast, Goro Fujita and Tanja Krampfert. They all did a fantastic job!
