Fireflies are little wonders of nature. Their bioluminescence light is extremely energy-efficient as they are able to use 95% of their produced energy. Agency Zum Goldenen Hirschen wanted to make a spot for RheinEnergie which connected this to the company`s plans to save energy and produce it even more efficiently with their program EK2020.
I was assigned by Telemaz Düsseldorf to realize this full CG spot and give it the right kind of mood.
Several fireflies should be shown as they would fly over a meadow by night. My concept was to create a micro-cosmos that showed these little insects from their point of view. By using the fireflies as the main light source I wanted to create an intimate feeling, the feeling that they had invited us to follow their flight.
As you start to study pictures of fireflies, you notice very fast that unfortunately they are quite ugly. As a matter of fact they are bugs and look a lot like cockroaches. They owe their reputation of sweetness only to the fact that they are so tiny that we don`t see how ugly they really are. After creating a first in form very natural looking 3D model of a
firefly, the agency decided to change its look.
We changed the head, scaled the limps down and emphasized the glowing bottom to make it much cuter than it is. In addition we decided to show the fireflies more as glowing light and not to come to near to show too much details of their body.
I really liked to work on this spot, as its concept offered the chance to create visually beautiful shots. Thanks a lot Hirschen and Telemaz! This spot was entirely realized by Das Dritte D. Additional Modeling was done by talented artist Volker Willmann.
