For the new Sony-Ericsson commercial for the W995 directed by Eric Hildebrandt I created a Mighty-Mecha-SciFi-Robot. The robot belongs to all sort of film and animation characters who are waiting to present themselves on Sony-Ericsson`s new media gadget. As Animation supervisor I was responsible for the 2D and 3D Animation of the Spot. In addition, I designed and animated the robot.
In the first days of the project I designed different shapes of robots, on two and four legs, and created rough models and animations to show Eric how they would look like and feel. Finally he chose a two legged bird like version. Eric did not want to have a clean and totally reflective robot, but an old rusty droid with a flavor of reggae Rastafarian, which should let him stand apart from the normal stereotypes you see in films. After the concept had received approval my team and I modeled, textured and rigged the final robot. After I had anima-
ted the needed shots, Tim Leydecker did a wonderful job in lighting and rendering the metallic beast. I enjoyed the work and time at VCC Berlin a lot. The location is nice and they have a very friendly and supportive team there.
